La Symphonie no 2 a été commandée par la "Big Ten Band Directors Association" en 1983. On m'a demandé d'écrire une œuvre majeure pour un groupe complet. La Symphonie a été créée pour la première fois en 1987 lors de la Convention de la CBDNA à Evanston, Illinois. Le groupe d'interprètes était le Symphonic Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble de la Northwestern University, sous la direction de John P. Paynter.
